“The Chamber of Secrets” novel in the Harry Potter series is generally considered the weakest of J. K. Rowling’s books – it does not have the joyful discovery of “Philosopher’s Stone”, the dark twists of “Prisioner of Azkaban” or the epic nature of “Goblet of Fire”, but is simply a very good story. However, I predict its relative simplicity will make “Chamber of Secrets” the most successful book-to-movie translation in the series, as it is undoubtably better than the first movie, and it will be a daunting task for film-makers to tackle the intricate plot lines of book three and the collosal book four.

Like all the books, “Chamber” begins midway through the summer as Harry’s twelfth birthday is nearing, and again he faces a rather dismal one in the company of his horrible uncle, aunt and cousin. Excitement is already on the move however, as when Harry enters his bedroom the house elf Dobby is waiting for him, who warns him that under no circumstances is he to return to Hogwarts, where a great danger is waiting for him.

But return he does, after being rescued from his family by the Weasley family and the now-famous flying blue Ford Angelia, and indeed finds what Dobby promised – something is stalking the halls of Hogwarts, putting all the students in great danger. Taking it upon himself to save his beloved home Harry and his friends Ron and Hermione seek out the clues, and find themselves facing a terrible evil. In a story filled with giant spiders, savage willow trees, magical swords, disembodied voices, mysterious diaries, glorious phoenixes, flying cars and Quidditch matches, the action and excitement doesn’t let up until the ending credits.

Once again Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson return as the three main protagonists, and I’m glad to say that while their acting was a little awkward in the first movie (understandable for newcomers) they’ve mellowed out and are much more natural with their characters and each other. Under-rated actor Tom Felton is again wickedly good, and Maggie Smith (McGonagall), Robbie Coltrane (Hagrid) and Alan Rickman (Snape) roll out brilliant performances. Unfortunatly I can’t say the same for Richard Harris – Dumbledore in my mind is an elderly yet lively and energetic man, yet here I was petrified he was going to kneel over any second.

The best part of any sequel in a series is the myraid of new characters to see, including the afore mentioned Dobby, the mysterious and sinister Tom Riddle, the narcissic Gilderoy Lockhart (played with great pizzazz by Kenneth Branaugh), and pompous Cornelius Fudge, and more of the Weasley family – more from Julie Walters as Molly Weasley, an introduction to Arthur Weasley, and from George, Fred and (especially) Ginny.

Three performances stick out though: Lucius Malfoy was great – cold, calm and elegant, this guy just *oozed* sinister charm, Moaning Myrtle, with her high-pitched sobs and shrieks was an unexpected surprise and Colin Creevy, the forerunner to Book Four’s reporter Rita Skeeter and J. K. Rowling’s dig at the media was a small, but essential gem, and I love that split-second scene of horror on his face as the runaway Buldger hurtles towards him!

Finally the sets, costumes and props are lovely, but the special effects are only so-so. The Quidditch game (again more visually exciting than any written account) is very good, as is the ‘monster in the chamber’, but the phoenix, spiders and Dobby could have used some tweaking.
All in all, a fun, interesting, colourful, sometimes-scary, and faithful adaptation to a beloved book, that (along with the Two Towers) brought 2002 to a fantasy-filled climax in the movie industry.

I’m a senior citizen who loves Harry Potter. I have read the first 3 books and will purchase “The Goblet of Fire” on books on tape.
I won’t go into the plot. Suffice it to say it follows the book. The acting was wonderful by our 3 main stars. There is not enough of Alan Rickman, a truly wonderful actor. Kenneth Branagh was so-so and I don’t know the man who played Lucious Malfoy but he was perfect. I hated him in “The Patriot” and hated him even more here. Richard Harris will be sorely missed. What a fine performance for his last film.
I never realized that the film was 2 3/4 hours. The time flew. The special effects are outstanding.
I liked the further character development. You see what a wonderful and loving family Ron Weesley comes from. You find out why Hagrid is the way he is. You also get to realzie why Draco Malfoy is the way he is when you get to see the father.
There was so much to see. So much to enjoy.
For the first movie, I saw the movie first and then read the book. For this story, I read the book first and then saw the movie. Either way, I was thrilled with both movies.
I can’t tell you how much I’m looking forward the the third movie.
If you haven’t had the opportunity to see “The Chamber of Secrets”, please go and see it. It’s a treat for the eyes, mind and soul.
Enjoy, enjoy, enjoy

If I were rating this movie solely on quality of the film, it would get one star. if i were rating it solely on how much i love to watch it even though it’s awful, it would get 5 stars. SO I averaged it and got 3.

The dialogue is horrendous, the effects cheesy, the music (not the soundtrack which is great, but the score) indescribably awful. It looks like a made for TV movie.

However- I can’t stop watching it. i saw it 3 times in the theater and pre-ordered my own copy. It entertains me. Plus, Edward is nice to look at… oh, James too. LOVE James. To me this movie is absolutely hysterical- where it doesn’t intend to be. The scene where Edward first sees Bella in class and he looks as if he may throw up on her??? Great! The look that Billy Black and Edward exchange as they pass each other in their cars? Priceless. I love the baseball scene! But the crouch down and prepare to fight stance they take at the end… Can anybody say Power Rangers? But just mentioning all this makes me want to watch it again. I know it makes no sense. It just has that power.

I should be embarrassed to like this, but I’m not. I will watch it over and over again proudly. I will recommend it to anyone I can. Watch it and love it. But know that it’s terrible and know that it can’t compare to the book and that all of it’s charm is due to it’s cheesiness.

I had heard about the fantasy books by a friend when they first came out but didn’t have the time to look into them. By the time the movie came out, I’d nearly forgotten about the book referral, but asked my hubby to take me as it looked like a good vampire romance flick. The scenery of the Pacific Northwest forests, rivers, and coastline was breathtaking and as a native to this area, it was like going out into my own backyard which made the film that more appealing. I was so captivated by the actors portrayal of the characters (the facial expressions and emotions brought out of the characters by Rob, Kristen, Peter, Nikki, and the rest were mesmerizing) and the depth of the back-story left me desiring more! The very next day after viewing the movie in the theater – I raced to the bookstore to grab the first book. I was hooked, read through all four books (plus went to the authors website to read the extra materials she had posted there) in a week. Then, still not satisfied, went back and saw the movie several more times – IN THE THEATER, something I’ve never felt compelled to do before – because I was so drawn to the characters and the story. This may have been written for the young adult audience but I’m 32 and a parent of four children, and still found the story to be well worth my time.

If you haven’t read the stories, I encourage you to do so. Regardless, this film will be a treasured part of your movie collection and one you’ll be sure to watch several times before you’ll feel satisfied.

Well, I know I’ve been curious. I’ve wanted to look behind the Fugazi curtain to hear and see what goes on when the band writes, tours and records. Fugazi’s new Instrument video and soundtrack CD provide an all-access pass to the inner workings of one of today’s premier bands.

I ordered both from Dischord and watched the video (a few times, I’m not ashamed to admit) before listening to the soundtrack CD, and I think that’s the way to do it. The documentary, shot nonstop by Jem Cohen on tours, in the studio and at rehearsals, shows the members of Fugazi doing what they do best: making music and going to all of the places it takes them. There are several laugh out loud parts — a well-meaning fan who incorrectly recalls Ian’s days in Black Flag, while mispronouncing his name, Guy plotting the death of a Hollywood legend, Joe’s futile attempt to tell everyone about his Iggy Pop dream, Brendan rigging a motel showerhead with Dial soap, a slick MuchMusic correspondent who enthusiastically mangles their lyrics…It’s a feel-good flicka that leaves me wishing that Guy had a dance studio I could sign up for.

The Instrument soundtrack includes demos of songs that haven’t evolved into regular album tracks and raw working ‘drafts’ of now-familiar songs, some of which are included in the documentary’s music bed. A dream come true for any Fugazi fan.

I love this movie…and I hate this movie. Some of it, particularly the early concert material, thrills me more than just about any rock footage, ever. As a collector of punk/hardcore video (Pistols, Clash, Iggy Pop, Minor Threat, X, Circle Jerks, Big Black, Sonic Youth…) I don’t give such praise lightly.

Fugazi are equally powerful in the interview segments, where they come off as more intelligent, passionate and witty than on their records. Everything this band is about is represented (in some form or other) in this film, and I’m stunned by Cohen’s skill and concision in portraying them so vividly in just two hours. To watch it repeatedly is to fall in love with Fugazi.

Somehow these highlights only make my frustration with the film worse. Some stretches are infected with the dreaded “Rattle and Hum” disease: “casual” interviews more boring than disarming, a confusing chronology, and some unspeakably artsy b & w footage of blurry buildings, slow-motion jamming without live sound, and dazed concertgoers. This stuff would be forgivable from a freshman film-school angle if it didn’t seem to necessitate butchering some great band performances.

Because Fugazi are basically about music, especially live music. And my main objection is that this movie, for all its wit and integrity, gives no sense of what Fugazi were like in concert. No song is shown from beginning to end; they are all interrupted, disemboweled, or shown at varying speeds with average studio jams dubbed over them. Think about it–a stage performance is a pure presentation of thought and emotion that needs no reinterpretation. Quite often you wonder at the arrogance of a film-maker who imposes his artistic vision over that of the band. Or, to be plain, you get bloody pissed when a great song is cut off or drowned out to suit the Auteur’s self-indulgence.

So, people, if you want to live the genius of the live Fugazi, try to catch them while they’re still around. For all its power this film makes me sad, both because a no-bs style would’ve been much more exciting, and because the Fugazi show I saw in 1988 had little of the dynamite contained in its best moments.

Guillermo Del Toro has become the new master of dark fantasy — first with the quirky clockpunk “Hellboy,” then with the Oscar-winning “Pan’s Labyrinth.” Not to mention forthcoming travels to Middle-Earth.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Hellboy II: The Golden Army! Click Here

So you know he has the skills to pit Mike Mignola’s scarlet anti-hero against an army of fairies and elves, and not make it silly. Instead, it’s a spectacular dark fantasy full of humor, action, quirky appeal, romance, and some truly astounding special effects. But what really shoves this movie over the top is Del Toro’s brilliant direction, and the stunning performance by Ron Perlman.

Decades ago, Professor Broom (William Hurt) told a small Hellboy a yuletide bedtime story about the Elf King Balor and his unstoppable Golden Army, and how the crown that controls the Army was split into thirds and divided among fairies and humans.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Hellboy II: The Golden Army! Click Here

Well, you can’t really expect that kind of power to never be revived.

Cut to current day. Hellboy (Perlman), Liz (Selma Blair) and Abe (Doug Jones) investigate a strange supernatural attack on an auction house, where the archeological curiosity known as the Crown of Bethmoora was being sold — only to be attacked by savage tooth fairies. Turns out the crown was stolen by Prince Nuada (Luke Goss), a resentful young elf who is determined to take the world back from humanity — using, of course, the Golden Army.

And while Hellboy chafes against strict new commander Johann Krauss (a suit filled with ectoplasm), Abe encounters Nuada’s sister, Princess Nuala — who also happens to have the last third of the crown. But Nuada will not allow anyone to oppose him as he searches for the Golden Army’s location, and Hellboy and his friends must venture into a strange, ancient kingdom to stop him from destroying all of humanity.

The worst you can say about “Hellboy II: The Golden Army” is that it sticks to the formula of the demonic outsider with a dark destiny, and his continuing romantic woes. There’s some retreading as Hellboy realizes anew that he’ll never fit into the world of humans, because he’s big and red and has horns and a tail. Okay, we got it. Next big psychological issue!

Fortunately those flaws are relatively minor ones. Del Toro is still able to spin a dark, twisted story with some truly bizarre creatures (the utterly alien, eye-winged Angel of Death), clockpunk robots, trippy underground goblin markets and a new BPRD agent who is basically ectoplasm in a suit. And for the action scenes, Del Toro does not pull punches when it comes to the smashing action scenes — giant thrashing vines and a one-on-one duel with Nuada are among the highlights.

With all this going on, it would be easy to neglect the characters. But Del Toro packs the script with solid snappy dialogue and some poignantly romantic moments — including some pretty startling actions from dear ol’ Abe. And he also adds little moments to this epic story that remind us that these are supposed to be people — such as Hellboy’s bickering with Krauss, or Abe and Hellboy getting drunk and having a little Manilow singalong together. It’s just so cute.

But what really sets this movie apart is the “children of the Earth.” No flitting Victorian sprites — these are creatures that are weird, grotesque, dangerous and immensely powerful, from nasty little tooth fairies up to vast rock monsters and plant gods. There’s an alien, bizarre aesthetic to these creatures that feels wholly real, as if Neil Gaiman casually dropped a few sketches onto the drawing board.

But as amazing as the visuals are, Del Toro never neglects the characters. Perlman is perfect for the role of “big Red” — he’s gruff, sarcastic, moody, but also endearing and self-deprecatingly likable. There are more hints of his potentially dark future, and he faces some delicately-handed temptations. But Big Red’s good heart is still very much in the forefront, no matter how much human beings fear him.

Blair gives a more lively performance here as a spunkier Liz, who also has some surprising developments in store. Jones is pitch-perfect as the fish-man, who experiences the first pangs of young love for Nuala, while Goss gives a chilling, whispery performance as a rebel prince who is willing to do whatever it takes — even kill family — if it helps him restore the fey kingdom. Pretty good villain, since he clearly isn’t trying to be bad.

There’s also loads of extras in this particular edition of the movie — feature commentary with director Guillermo Del Toro, Jeffrey Tambor, Selma Blair and Luke Goss, as well as some deleted scenes also with commentary with Del Toro, a prologue to the movie, a digital script, image gallery, a “Puppet Theatre” for the opening sequences of the film, concept art, interviews, and other such stuff. Also making-of documentaries — seven mini-documentaries that visit the set, the “Troll Market Tour” in the movie’s most memorable “faerie” setting, and the two-hour “Hellboy: In Service Of The Demon.” Basically, it turns the film inside-out and lets you examine its guts.

“Hellboy II: The Golden Army” is a wild, darkly ornate ride through the world of half-forgotten gods and fey. While it has a few flaws, those are far outweighed by the brilliant of Del Toro’s vision.

You know you’re not watching a formulaic comic book film when one of the highlights is a drunken rendition of “Can’t Smile Without You” by Hellboy and Abe Sapien. “Hellboy II: The Golden Army” is a more confident, assured outing than the first film and while it does not draw from Mignola’s comics for its plot it is perhaps better off for it, lacking the usual burden of comparison and expectations. “The Golden Army” is more fantastical than the first film and is less sci-fi oriented but this is the sort of thing Del Toro does exceptionally well as a writer. He never lets the fantasy become the focus of the film, instead concentrating on characters and delivering action scenes that can only be described as, forgive the crass immaturity, kickass.

As entertaining as many comic book-to-film adaptations are it is a rare event when one can call one of these films a true artistic achievement. I am convinced without a shadow of a doubt that Guillermo Del Toro’s entire career has been leading up to this film, particularly regarding his work as screenwriter here. The comedy feels less forced and is worked incredibly well into the script here, so much so that it doesn’t feel remotely unnatural when the scene of comic drunken singing leads directly without a break into one of the film’s most intensely dramatic sequences. Del Toro’s handling of character has never been better, not even with “The Devil’s Backbone”, which is still my favorite of his films, and his sheer skill and ability when it comes to telling a fairytale-esquire fantasy is astonishing, as proved in the prologue to this film. In short this is Del Toro at the top of his game and providing artistry the likes of which we rarely if ever see in summer blockbusters. It’s only fair that an astonishingly brilliant comic like “Hellboy” by an astonishingly brilliant artist like Mike Mignola is adapted this well and by someone as talented at what they do as he is.

How refreshing it is, a week after the release of “Hancock”, which to me epitomizes everything wrong with action film-making today, that we get “The Golden Army” which features hands down some of the finest action scenes we have ever seen in this sort of film. Just stunningly beautiful, well-shot, well-crafted, the sort of thing that leaves one wondering how much time and effort went into it and endlessly thankful that some really talented people went to the trouble of making the film.

The film is generally just superb on a technical level. Why am I even saying this? Of course it is. Danny Elfman composing, Guillermo Navarro serving as cinematographer, top-notch editors, fantastic special effects wizards. It’s a world-class crew that made this film. I shouldn’t be surprised at its quality but “The Golden Army” really just floored and astonished me with how good it is. The cast is also excellent, proving once again that you don’t need ‘big names’ to carry a movie. Just about everyone here is excellent, particularly Perlman with another excellent turn as Hellboy and the underrated Selma Blair as Liz Sherman.

“Hellboy II: The Golden Army” provides essentially everything a Del Toro or Mignola fan would want. I imagine it will entertain and charm many outside those circles as well with its fantastic action sequences, engaging characters, and wonderful sense of humor. I would personally go as far as calling “Hellboy II: The Golden Army” one of the top five or so comic book movies ever made.

500 years later is, in my opinion, one of the most informative, captivating, and eyebrow raising films produced through the honest, but too often ignored lens of the Afrikan centered collective. It not only outlines in outstanding narration, the history of Afrikan peoples’ early relationship with the Europeans (and Arabs to a certain extent) via. the Trans-Atlantic slave trade, as well as our experiences in the so called New World; but it breaks down with unshakeable precision, the damaging results such enslavement has had on Afrikans, not only in the Western world, but also back on the Motherland. Such modern-day manifestations are organized into specifc issues which formulates into the chapters of the DVD (i.e. Race, Class, Education, Culture, etc). Without revealing too much, I can say with absolute confidence that this documentary is deserving of all the accolades, awards, and honors received at this point. Truely a must-see!

This is an excellent doucmentary of the issue of slavery and its reprecussions from a BLACK perspective, which is very important. Too often we allowed the descents of the very people that enslaved us to dictate to us how to view and look at our holocaust. This is a wonderful companion to the great movie SANKOFA, which is a thousand times more powerful than Roots.

The Great Snail Race- Squidward and Spongebob enter their snails to see who’s the winner. Unfortunately, none of them is the winner but it is Patrick!

This Spongebob movie looks great because 5 episodes are from season 4. My only complaint is why they put The Great Snail Race in. It’s already on Spongebob Goes Prihistoric. They need to put episodes like Reef Blower or Rock Bottom on here. Here are the list of episodes.

Where’s Gary (double length) 9/10: Spongebob is too busy playing with his new Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy Ping-Pong that he forgot to feed Gary! Gary runs away and meets an old lady.

Skill Crane 10/10: Mr. Krabs gets a crane machine for the Krusty Krab to get money. Spongebob always wins but Squidward doesn’t. Hilarious

Krabs vs. Plankton: 7/10 Spongebob and Mr. Krabs go to court. O.K.

Good Neighbor: I haven’t seen this episode yet. I heard it was good.

The Lost Matress: 10/10: Mr. Krabs loses his matress so Spongebob and Squidward buy him a new one even though his old one was full of money.

The Great Snail Race 6/10: Spongebob enters Gary in a snail race against Squidward’s snail, Snelly and Patricks rock. Spongebob trains Gary too hard and gets exhausted. During the race, Gary goes out of control and Snelly helps him. Patrick’s rock wins! O.K. I guess

Columbia’s cliffhangers tend to be campy or silly by serial standards, but this early effort (1939) is a very enjoyable adventure. The personable Warren Hull is excellent in the title role. Movie buffs will recognize many of the cast members from Columbia’s “B” pictures and Three Stooges movies. Slick production and good direction by Sam Nelson and Norman Deming (who were usually assistant directors) push this one head and shoulders above the general run of Columbia serials. (Watch for a beautifully staged wrap-up in the last chapter, when the masked villain finally gets his!) A note about this video edition: the soundtrack of Chapter 1 was damaged, so the video producers hired actors and technicians to fake a new synchronized soundtrack. The repair job is rather distracting (the suave, pencil-mustached Kenneth MacDonald suddenly has a twangy Texas tenor), but it only lasts a few minutes; the rest of the serial is fully intact and the source print is in top shape. Picture and sound are excellent. The 2-DVD set also includes a selection of trailers from Mascot, Republic, and Universal serials. Highly typical of Saturday-matinee adventures, and a fine choice for first-time serial viewers or for fans who’ve never seen this long-unavailable film. (Let’s hope VCI or Columbia will release the even better “Spider’s Web” serial to home video.)

Okay, I’m going to start this review by admitting that I never liked heroic magicians in fancy suits, top hats, and tails. Even Zatanna, who had great legs, grated on me. So MANDRAKE THE MAGICIAN began with a strike against it. On the other hand, it has Warren Hull, who was so excellent in THE SPIDER’S WEB (and pretty good in THE GREEN HORNET STRIKES AGAIN, too). And of course Mandrake himself was created by Lee “The Phantom” Falk, so that’s a third hand. And if you think that’s impossible, well, he IS a magician.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Mandrake the Magician! Click Here

A mysterious arch-criminal known as “The Wasp” (he actually wears a rather effeminate silk mask and cape, not a fierce-looking wasp get-up, unfortunately) is after a new invention that can… well, it can do something pretty terrible, I’ll bet. Into the fray stumbles Mandrake, who, with his faithful giant African manservant Lothar, foils the various machinations of Mr. Silky Drawers. Only Lothar is, not a muscular ebon giant, but instead a rather doughy guy who looks like a Philippino and dresses like an extra in a Sinbad picture.

I liked the first couple of chapters; Mandrake does a magic trick or two, and occasionally tosses those nifty little smoke capsules and then sprints out of the room, leaving the villains wondering how the heck he did that. It gets tiresome, however, and pretty soon even Mandrake loses interest, tossing the capsules and then just standing there, waiting for the smoke to clear and the fisticuffs to continue. Not long into the serial, the magic angle is completely forgotten, the eveningwear goes in the closet, and for all intents and purposes Mandrake turns into Dick Tracy.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Mandrake the Magician! Click Here

Ultimately, the darn thing is disappointing. A Mandrake serial should have done more with the mystical aspect of the character, even if only having its hero pull bunnies out of his hat to throw at the villains. It runs out of steam midway through, and – although at 12 chapters, it’s the shortest of the 57 Columbia chapterplays – becomes rather tedious in the second half. Co-directors Sam Nelson and Norman Deming did one more serial together (OVERLAND WITH KIT CARSON) and then Columbia dumped them and handed over the serial reins to James W. Horne, who directed the next ten Columbia serials all by his lonesome.

VCI’s DVD is good, not great. Some of the soundtrack of chapter one has decayed over the years, and voices were overdubbed for the DVD release, but if you cared about stuff like that, you wouldn’t have read this far into the review anyway. Bonuses include a poster gallery, biographies, and serial trailers.

Although not as good as the original Polie movie, Baby Bot Chase carries over the good clean fun. My daughter does not get to watch much television or movies because most are so inappropriate. However, the Polies are fun, upbeat, positive, overcome challenges with problem solving, they work together with family and friends, and there is no violence or shouting. I don’t mind that my little one is ‘addicted’ to the Polie family movies!

Also, we bought the VHS version this time, but wish we’d gone with the DVD. The DVD does a much better job of displaying the amazing graphics in the film.

My two year old is a big fan of Rolie Polie Olie and I must say that this movie was a lot better then The Great Defender of Fun movie. This is a more up beat, happy movie with some very cute songs and a very cute story line. It’s a very retro new age way in cartoons with its’ bright colors and wonderful characters! This is a very entertaining show. The only thing bad I have to say is that these cartoons are usually around ten to fifteen minutes in length and this is a lot longer for a child to sit through and may get bored. But for the older kids it would be fine.

The cinematography of Africa and war torn Uganda is beautiful, amazing, and saddening in “War Dance”. It serves a a bleak backdrop for an enlightening film set in a refuge camp where a group of children, scarred by civil war, learn their tribal dance to compete in the national dance competition.

The most heart-breaking and genuine moment of War Dance is when a former child soldier confronts a captured rebel soldier about why he (the soldier) participated in kidnapping children and indoctrinating them into becoming children soldiers. The bravery of that small child and the empty soulless response of the soldier were the most powerful scene’s in a film full of them. I highly recommend this film!!

I saw this film at the Sundance film festival in 2007 and was completely blown away by the originality of weaving together documentary, dance, music, war, and horrific pain suffered by lovely children. I don’t believe it gained any wide popularity which is unfortunate because while it is a heart-wrenching story, there is so much joy and hope at the end of the movie, you start to believe anything is possible…beautiful cinematography (may inspire my own journey to Uganda), amazing music, and just an overall lovely film.
