But in the third season of the series, Calista Flockhart goes deep and gives the most nuanced performance of the year. She deserved an Emmy for this season (and they snubbed her). The third season had it’s share of mistakes, but Flockhart was a joy to watch. It’s so good to have her back on television.

Brothers and Sisters feels like an amalgamation of numerous television shows all blended up and mixed into one huge hodgepodge story. With some parts Army Wives, West Wing, Arrested Development and many others, Brothers and Sisters captures a lot of their elements but rarely ever delivers the part that made them worthwhile. The show may fail in the ingenuity of its story and how it tells it, but in terms of casts few shows on right now can match its star power. It may not be the best thing you’ve ever watched, but it has crafted a deeply tangled mess for itself that the writers are clearly enjoying detangling and retangling (which isn’t even a word) all over again.

It’s not that the life of any one person in the Walker family is all that complicated, but just that there are so many people involved that even if they all led lives of simplicity, the sheer volume would be bound to create some conflict either way. So when you toss in Justin, a drug-addicted veteran (Dave Annable), and his new romantic interest (Emily VanCamp), who was until last season presumed to be the lovechild of his father by another woman (Patricia Wettig), things are bound to get interesting. Or maybe you’d prefer the addition of Kitty (Calista Flockheart) and her ex-presidential nominee husband (Rob Lowe) fighting hard for the Republican conservative agenda even after hiring Kitty’s [...] brother (Matthew Rhys) whose dreams of partnership at his firm fell through, perhaps due to his relationship with his life partner (Luke Macfarlane)? You don’t think the show’s plot is burdened enough? Then let’s add some conflict in the family business as Sarah (Rachel Griffiths) resigns after firing her brother (Balthazar Getty) from his position as the company’s lead counsel. All of this happens as the matriarch Nora (Sally Field) struggles to find her calling after leaving the family business with the encouragement of the family’s last remaining sage Saul (Ron Rifkin), whose coming out of the closet hasn’t affected him professionally but rather personally in his family. The big seldom-happy family discover a few new surprises in the third season, but none so important as the identity of a new potential member of the Walker family.

The cast is simply a powerhouse. You have stars here who have headlined past programs and still others who lead healthy careers on the silver screen. Seeing them congregated in one place leads you to believe that they all saw something in Brothers and Sisters upon first reading the script – and they were right. For all its twists and turns there is a stark feeling of family pervading it all. Their conflicts and celebrations feel appropriately weighted with everything that’s come in seasons before and yet petty disputes can still occur unfettered. It isn’t bloated, but there is still a sense that the writers are grasping at too much and consequently some of the show’s story is being underdeveloped. With that said, for having so much going on at once, never does it feel like any one character is taking the spotlight or that any are being left out; everyone’s presence is felt, it’s just that none are really allowed to gain the momentum needed to become dramatic bulwarks to pad the series’ vitality.

DVD Extra Features:

You’ll find audio commentaries on a few episodes as well as deleted scenes, but neither is all that illuminating. As if to research the season’s new direction for the Ojai business, the cast takes a trip to a family-run vineyard for the grand tour. They laugh, they drink, they make merry – and you can live it vicariously through your TV set. There’s an introspective piece by the matrons of Brothers and Sisters (Field and Wettig) wherein they discuss their roles and how their characters have developed over the seasonal arcs. Finally, there’s a bit of dual-action blooper reel business going on: there’s the official gag reel for outtakes and then a second little featurette about the cast and the pranks they pull on the set.

The show has only gotten better by twisting itself into loops, but in doing so it sacrificed depth for content. For some the trade-off was a good one, for others not so much. Where do you fall?

In a time where masked slashers ruled the eighties, seeing a horror film as original as PHANTASM II was a rarity. Here we have a sequel that not only is equal to the original, but completely reinvents itself from the ground up with quicker pacing, scarier visuals, and an all-around more polished production.

Yes, the first PHANTASM is a classic, and in the tradition of ALIENS, here we have a radically different- yet equally satisfying- action/horror romp. So why no DVD?!?

We all like to complain about what films aren’t available on DVD, but I feel stronger about this flick than any other. If only good ol’ MGM would step in and buy the rights to 2 & 3 and put together a nifty box set.

The long and outrageous wait is over and we FINALLY have PHANTASM II on DVD in region one. Universal knew that fans were in a frenzy to get this one and they also knew they didn’t have to bother doing anything more than a bare bones release. Fans would buy whatever version they decided to throw our way and they did the LEAST amount of work on this they could get by with. What we got was a good looking anamorphic print of the film and an unimpressive STEREO soundtrack. Thats right, only 2 channel sound (even though the other films in this series all got new Dolby 5.1 remixes Universal knew they didn’t have to bother). There are NO EXTRAS on this disc (other than one faded and dirty copy of the trailer). No cool animated menus, no commentary track, deleted scenes, making of features, retrospective documentary, cast interviews, NOTHING. All of this material is available and is on the worldwide releases of this film but the North American market gets ripped off by Universal. It would be so nice if they would allow Anchor Bay to do a decent release of this remarkable film but sadly it looks like that will never be a reality for the region 1 poplulation. Still…we do at least now have the film on DVD and the anamorphic transfer looks far better than my old pan and scan VHS copy. Even my laserdisc copy was pan and scan so this is a nice improvment. I sort of like the new cover art for this release as well although Unviersal even went super cheap on the flimsy, light weight keepcase this came in. They really should be ashamed of themselves for holding the film hostage all these years and then giving us such a no frills version when they finally decided to release it. Its a great film and an impressive follow up to the original film and it deserved so much better than this.

Reviewing the movie: I’m not a Jim Carrey fan, i’m really far from them (i think his acting in other movies is… well, dumb), besides, this movie is one of my favorites, and nobody could portray a better Mask character than Carrey.

This movie is not only a feast of special effects (by the ILM guys, inspired in the cartoon antics of Tex Avery), musical numbers, and laughs; this movie also has a message in it — “From Zero to Hero”.

Yeah! i know that this is part of the main title of the DVD (in theatres, it hasn’t this title), somebody could think that Zero is refering to Stanley Ipkiss, and Hero is the Mask, but this title is NOT refering to the Stanley Ipkiss’ Mask character, it’s refering to Stanley Ipkiss himself! The Mask character is far from being a Hero, it’s really a headache to Ipkiss and the society in general, but when Ipkiss realizes that he doesn’t need the mask and began to confront his inner fears (and “the bad guys”) without the mask help, that’s when Ipkiss become a Hero… in the real life, somehow that’s something that we can achieve when we stop “wearing our masks” and begin to act like ourselves, showing to the other who really are we.

Reviewing the DVD: The audio and video quality are good (the sound is Dolby Surround 5.1 and the video is remastered); this is a double sided disc, in one side you get the Full Screen version of the film, in the other the Widescreen version (something common in “old” dvd’s), in the extras side, you can see 2 deleted scenes (but without commentary..), an audio commentary by Chuck Russell (here you can learn why those 2 scenes where eliminated… unfortunatelly the audio comentary doesn’t have any subtitles, so, if you’re not an English speaker, probably you’ll have a problem); audio in english and french, subtitles in spanish, french and english; the theatrical trailer…. the box says that the dvd has Production notes, but i can’t find none.

This is a good movie, and it doesn’t matter if you’re not a Carrey fan (like myself)

Did you know that this excellent comedy was planed to be a horror?! Based on popular comic, THE MASK would be a storu about green killer who tells sarcastic remarks, while he’s tearing a part his victims with an axe. But, when director Chuck Russell got Jim Carrey for this role he decided to do a comedy. And lucky for him and us he did a great job. I remember when I saw THE MASK for the first time. Fantastic story, interesting characters, and of course, Jim Carrey in role which made him famous. Story is about unsuccessful, shy banker who comes in possesion of an ancient wooden mask which turnes him into a wild, green, party creature who now has everything: powers, money and love. It influented on me so much that I find the same dog like Milo (that is one damn smart dog!). Carry gave the best of himself: he danced, sang and made jokes all the time. Cameron Diaz left me breathless, and two caps…, well, see it for yourself. This film guaranties fun whole 90 minutes it lasts and trust me, you will love it.

The intro of the movie was pretty average – boy befriends girl… girl moves away… girl comes back and has a hot romance with boy in high school… girl dumps boy…
Then the movie becomes interesting… as Berke (Ben Foster), leaves his ex-girlfriend’s, Allison (Melissa Sagemiller), front lawn, the music of “Love Will Keep Us Together” plays and Vitamin C comes out of the garage with her band singing to the tune following Berke down the street. Pretty soon we see people joining in from a newly wed couple, to the UPS delivery woman, to two garbage men doing cartwheels, and more dancing to the tune of “Love Will Keep Us Together”. It’s really hilarious. To top it off, a marching band joins in and it can’t get any funnier than that. From that moment on, I knew this movie was going to be a winner. It was funny all throughout the movie with Martin Short playing Dr. Desmond Forrest Oates, a flamboyant drama/music teacher, to two of Berke’s best friends Dennis (Sisqo) and Felix (Colin Hanks), to Bentley “Striker” Lawrence (Shane West), a Backstreet Boys wan-na-be, who becomes Allison’s new main squeeze, to his eccentric liberal parents. Then you have Kelly (Kirsten Dunst) helping Berke out in a Shakespeare play, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”, in which she is also a part of, as a scheme to get Allison back. The movie evolves around the Shakespeare play and in it has funny moments and amusing musical numbers excluding “Dream Of Me” which I thought wasn’t funny at all but a beautiful song sang by Kirsen Dunst. The movie also has cameo appearances by Carmen Electra and Coolio. The movie was great, but the end made it even more special. Just when I thought it was over, Sisqo does a special performance of “September”, with Vitamin C, which made me want to buy this movie. I still can’t get this song out of mind, not that I want to. It’s that good. Too bad “September” is not in the soundtrack album. I think getting this movie just for the music alone is worth it, but the movie overall is a winner.

I went to go see this movie the day it opened which also happened to be my birthday. I was hoping to see a fairly good movie, something hopefully better than such recent dissapointments as Loser, Boys And Girls or Dude, Where’s My Car?. I was actually suprised to find myself not only liking this movie, but laughing as though it were an adult comedy. This movie is one of the few recent teen comedies that have actually had heart and humor… Ben Foster plays Berke, a guy who is very in love with this girl Allison. Things are going great until Allison realizes that she is no longer in love with Berke and decides to dump him.. So to win back her heart he decides to join the school’s production of A Midsummer’s Night Dream even though he doesn’t know alot about Shakespeare. Not wanting to look like a fool, he turns to his best friend’s little sister Kelly, played by Kirsten Dunst, who is very into Shakespeare for help. And before you know it Kelly falls in love with Berke and Berke is too blinded to notice because of Allison… This all seems very generic, but its very talented and charming cast livens things up and turns what could have been another teen dud into a very funny, romantic and heart warming story. Kirsten Dunst is just as perfectly suited in this role as she was in last summer’s smash hit Bring It On. Ben Foster looks like he will be a very talented young actor and he is very believable in this movie as the average teenage guy who doesn’t look like Freddie Prinze Jr. or Ryan Phillippe. The rest of the cast is perfect. Everyone including Colin Hanks, Sisqo, Mila Kunis, Vitamin C, Shane West, Kylie Bax and even a brief cameo from Carmen Electra help keep this movie fun and refreshing. But the reason to go see this movie is to watch Martin Short who is so funny you might want to take an extra pair of underpants! He plays the the director of the school play who is very into his work and very into criticizing his assistant and his cast. There have been better movies, but as far as teen movies go, especially the newer ones, this is one of the best. And for those of you who used to be John Hughes freaks, like myself, you’ll find that this movie is like taking a nostalgic look at some of the great classics… And I think this is a classic too.

It was with great anticipation that I viewed The Third Man recently. I had last seen it nearly 25 years earlier. At the earlier viewing I was impressed with the atmospheric treatment of Vienna and the mystery surrounding Joseph Cotton’s search for the truth about his friend Harry (Orson Wells). However, though I then thought of it as a very fine movie, I did not think it would rank in my top 20. Now I see what I missed as a younger person. I can also see why this film would rank as number one on a British list of greatest films of the 20th century.

The film is a surreal examination of the tension between loyalty, love, and friendship on the one hand, and truth and justice on the other. The Viennese are suffused with the cynicism of a destroyed continent and damaged culture. The British know only about the truth and justice side of the equation. The American writer of simple westerns still is naïve enough to care about friendship and truth, and follows both wherever they lead. At the same time, Carol Reed scarcely shoots a scene in which there are right angles. Nearly everything is tilted. Close-ups of faces exaggerate their features. The black and white of the film emphasizes the shadowy nature of the story and its moral underpinnings.

At first Holly Martins (Cotton) thinks he is helping his best friend, Harry Lime (Wells). At the same time he becomes Harry’s rival for the woman, Anna. When Harry realizes that Holly has discovered his true evil scheme, Harry has a chance to murder Holly and make it look like an accident. What stops him? Friendship? And why does Harry accept Holly’s invitation to meet? In the penultimate scene in the underground sewer tunnels, does Holly fire the final and fatal shot, or does Harry kill himself?

This magnificently filmed and wonderfully acted masterpiece has remained in my mind for days after seeing it. If you are a lover of cinema and not merely of movies, please get this classic. It richly deserves its reputation. Highly recommended.

Who was Harry Lime (Orson Welles)? An evil man, devil in the flesh who was responsible for the unspeakable crimes, yet brilliant, cheerful and charismatic. His most famous words, a short speech written by Welles himself, say a lot about his character and motivations:

“In Italy for 30 years under the Borgies they had warfare, terror, murder, and bloodshed, but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and the Renaissance. In Switzerland they had brotherly love – they had 500 years of democracy and peace, and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock.”

No wonder, we like him, even though we know what he’d done…

It has been said thousands of times about the greatest movie entrance ever – but what about his ‘exit’ – the fingers on the street? I think it is one of the greatest, too…

A beautiful mysterious girl with tragic past was in love with him and the unforgettable ending, so anti-Hollywood, so true to the film – was about her love that goes beyond the grave. I read that both Selznick (the producer) and author Graham Greene had initially argued for something more upbeat (Holly and Anna walking off arm-in-arm), but Reed disagreed. I am so happy that Reed won (I am sure millions of fans are, too). That was the way to finish the movie and make it much more than just typical noir. Makes the viewer think about love, friendship, betrayal, loyalty, the price one pays for them.

Amazing film – perfectly shot; almost flawless. It looks and feels like Welles himself could’ve made it. The influence of Citizen Kane is undeniable. The only problem I had – the music. I like it but it was very strange to hear it in the film like The Third Man. Maybe that was a purpose – instead of somber, moody, and ominous music that would be expected for the noir film, something completely different and out of place – cheerful but melancholy in the same time…

Criterion DVD is wonderful – the restored version of the film shines. There are two openings of the film available – British and American, and a lot of extras.

I was one who hounded the powers-that-be that this movie (that pre-dates ME by a good 23 years!) be released on DVD. I was thrilled when I received notice that it was being released and I just received it today (funny since I just happened to catch it on TV two days ago!). It’s a timeless classic with a fantastic (and woman-empowering)plot based on a true story. I still can’t imagine how they managed with 12 children but it gives me the courage to deal with my two (who sometimes make the mess of 12!). A great story for homeschoolers too- the importance of education could not be more delightfully presented.

I was worried that the quality of the DVD might not be up-to-snuff but it was great (unlike the other classic-movie DVD I just purchased, Life with Father, another favorite movie but the quality is quite poor).

By the way, I haven’t seen the Steve Martin adaptation of Cheaper by the dozen but I’ve heard/ read that the storylines have close to nothing (other than 12 children) in common. Instead, invest in this classic and you’ll be very pleased.

If I could give it more stars, I would!!

Unlike the supposed remake put out at the end of 2003, this original movie adaptation of the book actually has heart, is entertaining without resorting to cheap shots or gross-out humour, and is overwhelmingly true to the spirit of the book. It might take awhile for the average modern viewer to get into it, though, since there really isn’t much of a plot, not the way we’ve come to expect in modern movies, just a narration of various adventures the family had. This is by far one of the best and most honest screen adaptations of a book I’ve yet seen, right up there with ‘Gone with the Wind’ and ‘Fiddler on the Roof.’ However, screen adaptations of books being what they have to be due to time and money constraints, they naturally couldn’t fit everything in, and so had to cut and paste some events from the book together so they wouldn’t completely overlook the important stuff (and unlike many cut and paste jobs in other book-based movies, here it was done very tastefully instead of randomly and carelessly), and they did leave out a number of the funniest stories in the book, like Bill pushing the Chinese cook into the oven and the so-called interviews which ran in the paper, much to the family’s horror that a lot of the things they supposedly said and did were made up to embarrass them. They also got the birth order of the last two mixed up; Jane was the last-born child in real life, and Bob was the penultimate. Still, given what passes for entertainment nowadays and how movies based on books usually bear little or no coherent resemblance to the story which the viewers know and love, this is a very clean and fun family movie.

As this film opens, a sullen fourteen year old Walter (Haley Joel Osment) is about to be deposited with his two gruff and irascible old uncles against his will by his mother Mae (Kyra Sedgwick) while she supposedly pursues her education and a career. Hub and Garth McCann, played respectively by Robert Duvall and Michael Caine, are no more enamored of the arrangement than is Walter, but an uneasy truce occurs between them as Walter comes to understand their eccentricities and in fact serves as somewhat of an outlet for Garth’s desire to settle down somewhat in his final years. One of the elements twhich makes the film a true delight is the extreme nature of the antics of these “old men”, whether it is shooting at traveling salesmen for fun or alienating their relatives to maintain their solitude. The backdrop to the story is that Hub and Garth are rumored to be quite wealthy; and in fact Walter’s mother instructs him to attempt to locate the source and location of their supposed wealth. (Perhaps the mafia, or bank robberies, or the foreign legion?)

As Walter settles in with them and their numerous dogs (and a pig who thinks he’s a dog), the “plot suddenly thickens” as Hub acts strangely and Walter discovers mysterious evidence of a beautiful young woman somewhere in their history. Garth tells Walter a fantastic tale of foreign adventure and intrigue involving Hub and the enchanting princess Jasmine, and the story is actually incorporated into the movie in the form of the adventure epics of fifty years ago with Emanuelle Vaugier playing the role of Hub’s lost love. Meanwhile, some “used” circus animals arrive, including a tired and sick old lion who Walter nurses back to health as he enjoys the “jungle” habitat provided by the corn field that has emerged from their failed attempt to grow a vegetable garden. The movie reaches a wonderful climax as the forces of good confront the forces of evil (true comic book style) and Walter is forced to confront the fact that life is full of surprises, not all of which include happy endings, and that we have to be strong enough to accept unpleasant truths and move on.

But, of course, any description of the plot doesn’t convey the appeal of this film; the storyline is simply the backdrop for the life which is infused into this movie by the superb performances of the stars, the excellent directing, and the way in which the story unfolds. It is fun yet touching, with enough elements of the unexpected interspersed with truly laugh out loud humorous incidents to make the almost two hours fly by. It’s hard to know who is more appealing, those old second hand lions Robert Duvall and Michael Caine (who put their superb talents to use in a film they have stated that they really enjoyed making) or Jasmine, the circus lion who late in life was destined for her moment of glory. And the story has a marvelous symmetry, both in the juxtaposition of the opening and closing scenes and in the brief appearance of Josh Lucas as the adult Walter. Finally, the climatic moment is followed by a gradual conclusion to the story which incorporates a truly wonderful finale.

In some aspects this is a far from perfect film; in some respects it would be easy to write a critical review detailing the fact that the plot was pure fantasy and that no attempt was made to seriously address many of the issues which the movie raises. But such criticisms would not be consistent with the mood which the movie evoked for me and the remainder of the audience. This movie is about life, about its surprises and its enjoyment, and as corny as it is it is also great fun. I enjoyed it so much that I have chosen to ignore one of my personal reviewing rules; I decided to round up my rating to five stars in spite of the fact that I haven’t decided if it is good enough so that I will want to own the DVD. I know that I’ll enjoy watching it several more times and decided that was good enough. So, go see this lighthearted film when you want to smile and laugh and feel good about life and it will confirm that whether you’re old or a teenager it’s still possible to learn and grow and have a good time.

It occurs to me as I sit here pondering my review of “Secondhand Lions” that I must somehow cloak the first words that come to mind. Words, phrases, such as “a feel-good movie” or “good family fun” or “heart-warming.” As if it were, well, “uncool” to label a movie such things these days, almost like a movie kiss of death. Isn’t this a time of Hollywood special effects? Of hot babes and pyrotechnics? Of gratuitous violence and sensationalism? So it is. And so this movie is not. And oh, we are a glad audience for it!

Haley Joel Osment, to whom many of us in the movie audience were introduced in “Sixth Sense,” plays Walter, a young boy whose mother (Kyra Sedgewick) pursues everything in life but motherhood. He finds himself dumped like excess baggage on the well weathered front stoop of his two uncles’ country house. The uncles, played with wonderful eccentricity by Michael Caine and Robert Duvall, resist but later embrace their young nephew. How the three bond into a true family is a tale that does indeed warm the heart, lighten the spirit, and perhaps even restore a faded belief in today’s cynical world that goodness, yes, goodness, still has a place on the silver screen. Osment is absolutely first rate in this movie, and the two vintage stars, Caine and Duvall, still shine as brightly as ever, if not more so.

It may be that the popularity of movies such as this could send Hollywood a message. Good is still good on the movie screen.

There is an old saying that in a court-of-law it is irrelevant what the truth is. What DOES matter is the calibre of the lawyers that reside on both sides of the judiciary fence. This movie takes that dictum and pushes it to the edge of the envelope.

One of the most intriguing facets of the storyline is an implicit question that the film compels us to ask ourselves: Who is worse off? A prosecutor who is so good that he gets an innocent man executed or put away for life? Or a defense lawyer who is so good that he gets a guilty man off the hook, after which time he hurts or kills someone else? It is a question that must enter the minds of all who exercise the art of legalistic oratory at some point or other.

Al Pacino is without question the highlight of the flick. It is obvious that he takes great delight in playing the devil himself, and it shows in his performance. It is a role that is ideally suited to his demeanor. A nice touch was making his name John Milton, which is an allusion to the English poet who authored PARADISE LOST. This is the poem that detailed Satan’s fall from heaven as well as Adam & Eve’s fall from the Garden of Eden. As a sidenote, I would HIGHLY recommend PARADISE LOST; there are a couple of references to the work itself during the story.

It was rather painful to see Keanu Reeves occasionally try to fake a southern accent, but this was not his worst performance. There is a surprising amount of nudity in the film, and that’s always a good thing. This is ESPECIALLY true in any film which features Charlize Theron!

All in all this is a fun film to pick up, especially if you’re into the Faustian man-selling-his-soul-to-Satan genre. While the ending is a bit deus ex machina, the balance of the DVD makes up for the weak finale.

Here comes a sharp, strong-voiced New York city lawyer with a lot of experience complemented by rare physical and mental powers. Played by Al Pacino, John Milton is a loner who wins cases by ignoring what is and isn’t “by the book”. While in the process of establishing a law partner, Milton runs across hot shot Keanu Reeves, who is yet to lose. Reeves turns out to become the perfect missing piece to the puzzle for Pacino. His character spends a significant amount of time with his new law partner in business and pleasure circumstances, in order to indirectly let his new friend know him better, to find out who he really is. As time passes, tension between the two businessmen arises and Keanu, the perfect defender/convicter sees his life unfold to become a total nightmare.

“The Devils Advocate” has been compared to “The Firm”, but “The Firm” is more drawn out and isn’t in with the fantasy or horror genre. Al Pacino really shows his stuff in this, with a more than believable performance that features numerous profound monologues that are always mastered by this Italian legend. His costar, Keanu, hits the target for the first time, bringing genuine emotion and class to the table. Overall, “The Devil’s Advocate” is very intriguing, extremely well acted with some impressive special effects. I found this movie to be one of the best of the 90s.

A fitting end to one of the best anime of 2007. Unlike Gainax series before it, the ending makes sense. Well, not logical sense, but this is Gurren Lagann. But it does follow that crazy brand of GL sense, and it keeps its seriousness tempered with mind-blowing animation and energy. If anyone, and I mean anyone, did not get some manly mist-eyes in episode 26, they have no soul. Again, the ending couldn’t have been better. Highly recommended.

I absolutely love this series. Underneath the flash, action, surreality, completely bizarro and truly HUGE scale events of cosmic destruction and rebirth is a very touching story about friendship, love, and “fighting spirit” to transcend the bonds of despair. This is an absolute must have series. Its at turns exciting, funny, action-packed, ridiculous, visually edgy / eye-popping, stunning, surreal, touching, sad, exploitative and flat out mind-blowing in scale. You gotta see it to believe it. Maybe not everyone’s cup of tea, but I loved it. Highly recommended.

this is a Return to the classic status of the first House Party. this is also By far the funniest movie of the three by far. Bernie Mac was an excellent choice to play Kid’s uncle Vester. he looks and acts like the Late Robin Harris. Bernie adds the needed punch that House Party 2 lacked. Anthony Johnson as the caterer puts in some hilarious moments. Michael Colyar as Showboat has the return of the “villain” that House Party 2 lacked. The groups Immature( at the time) and TLC add the charisma and catchy tunes that made the first one classic and the music that House Party 2 lacked( no disrespect to Raphaal Saadiq). An Excellent Movie that you can watch over and over and not get tired of it. This along with the first one will never go out of style. Even Cidney makes an appearance in this film. Lets not forget Reynaldo Rey’s performance as Vita’s father…….Hilarious as well as Aunt Lucy who must have alzheimers or something as she sometimes spews out mindless lines that have nothing to do with the conversation. Chris Tucker makes one of his first Movie appearances also. A Must See. they definitely went out and left a huge impression as one of the greatest trilogies ever. Again A Must See.

This movie was a huge dissapointment. I feel Kid ‘N Play peaked with Class Act. House Party I is of course a classic, and I felt it was out done by House Party II (those who say this one is better than that film are our of their minds). This film came out 3 years after that one, so I guess the lack of an immediate follow up may be the first clue that this movie wasn’t going to be up to standards. My main beef with this film can probably be contributed to waht was going wrong with hip hop culture at the time it came out. This movie seems slightly more thugged out than the previous House Parties. Those movies had a more pure b-boy feel to them. You can feel the impact of the westcoast gangsta bandwagon in this film. They should’ve just avoided this and done their own thing reguardless. I doubt this has anything to do with what Kid ‘N Play would’ve wanted, so the blame probably goes on the writer/director/studio. They never got played out as rappers imho. Its just the industry got all messed up by this gangsta bs, and obviously a group with their kind of aesthetic could not surviive. Other things I was dissapointed by was the lack of characters from the earlier two films. Sidney gets a couple of cheap cameos instead of a starring role like she should’ve had. Other than Kid ‘N Play and Pops’ photograph, thats all there is that links this to the earlier films. However, Kid ‘N Play don’t even get a fair shake in this movie because alot of their screen time is stolen by those gimmickly, little midgets, Immature, who I seriously wanted to kick the sh** out of. Bernie Mac, however, is hilarious in this film, as always. Hes one of this film’s saving graces. There is also a really funny family dinner scene where the crap hits the fan. Overall though, this movie is boring, unfunny, and lacking the charm of Kid ‘N Play’s other films. Go check those out instead, only get this one if you’re really interested in seeing the duo on screen again.
