The second Godzilla movie is a transitional entry in the series. Serious, but not as grim as “Godzilla, King of the Monsters,” we see the first traces of the camp humor that became a trademark of Japanese sci-fi. It is one of the few movies of the series that does a “hand-off” from the previous flick. Dedicated fans will recognize Dr. Yamane from the first Godzilla film. In addition, Godzilla (also known as “Gigantis”) meets Angilus, the first of many bizarre enemies. In somber B/W photography, the story of dueling monsters on the loose unfolds. This time it’s Osaka and not Tokyo, threatened with fiery destruction. As usual, the monsters invade populous areas, destroy buildings, and threaten civilization. As usual, conventional military hardware has no effect. The English-dubbed dialogue is occasionally hilarious. The special effects and other production values are typical of Japanese sci-fi. This movie, virtually overlooked through the years, initially appeared in the USA as “Gigantis the Fire Monster.” It played on a double feature program back in 1959/1960 with “Teenagers From Outer Space” (reviewed elsewhere in …). Godzilla movies are an acquired taste that delight fans and repulse “normal” viewers. For aging baby-boomers, and other serious collectors of low-budget sci-fi, this movie is a recommended treat.

This film made in 1955 is the very first sequel made to the original “Gojira” aka “Godzilla, King of the Monsters” in its US release. The film was rushed into production in order to capitalize on the popularity of the first film. In the US it was apparently released by a different film company than the first film, so the title was changed such that the word “Godzilla” didn’t even appear in it! The US theatrical release title was “Gigantis the Fire Monster.” The film has been released in the US under other titles over the years, such as “The Return of Godzilla” and as “Godzilla Raids Again” when it was on VHS tape. The original Japanese title was apparently, “Gojira no gyakushû” or “Gojira Strikes Again” in English.

I am a huge Godzilla fan and have been since I was a small child, and in all the years I watched these films on TV, in the theater, and on home video, I’ve never seen this film broadcast on television and I apparently missed it when it was available on VHS. I didn’t even know it existed until I saw it listed in Michael Weldon’s Psychotronic Film Guide years ago. It seems that the fact that this film was not released in the US by the same company that released the original film has doomed this one to obscurity for an extremely long time. However, this situation is now corrected with the release of the film to DVD.

FILM SYNOPSIS, PRODUCTION TRIVIA, COMMENTS

As was stated in the original Gojira, it does turn out that there are more of these monstrous creatures in the sea than just the one Godzilla that was destroyed at the end of the first film. This film is more of a typical 1950s “monster smash ‘em up” picture than the original film and less of a statement on nuclear horror. This sets the tone for many Godzilla pictures to come. There were also some apparent changes to the Gojira costume for this film as well as to the focus of the story. It also began the now long-standing tradition of matching Godzilla up with other monsters as Angiurus, sometimes called Anguilas, makes his debut in this film. He’s the monster that looks a bit like an ankylosaur with a touch of giant hedgehog.

This film is a fairly average entry in the Godzilla series with little of the serious dramatic metaphors for and references to nuclear war so prevalent in the original Japanese version of the first film, but kaiju completists and monster movie fans will probably want to see this film because it has been so rarely seen or available up until now. The Japanese version is coherent, fairly well-acted and enjoyable. The American version is so hilariously bad that it’s hugely entertaining as unintentional comedy! The American version is filled with nonsensical dialogue that has nothing to do with the original Japanese, it’s loaded with cheesy stock footage that does not appear in the original film and it’s voiced-over by a narrator (Keye Luke) that NEVER stops talking. Seriously, the American producer insisted on non-stop narration that never shuts up and insists on describing things that are clearly portrayed visually in the film. It’s just terrible, but funny terrible! The American version would have been a great subject for Mystery Science Theater 3000. Be sure to listen to the commentary track on the American version after watching the film once without it. It’s informative and highly entertaining.

DVD INFORMATION ON CONTENT INCLUDING EXTRA FEATURES

This DVD contains both the original 1955 Japanese version of the film as well as the 1959 American release dubbed in English. George Takei (Star Trek) and Keye Luke (Charlie Chan, Gremlins) both supplied voices for the English version. The subtitles for the uncut Japanese version were newly produced for this release. Like the recent excellent 2-disc DVD release of the original Gojira, this disc has commentary and featurettes by Steve Ryfle and Ed Godziszewski.

Note that the general release date for this DVD was originally supposed to be in November 2006, but it has been pushed back till spring 2007. This information comes directly from the godzillaondvd website, which is the official website of the producers of this DVD and the only place where the DVD can be purchased until general release.

I’m giving this release 3 stars for the movie and 5 stars for the great DVD treatment for a final rating of 4 stars. Monster flick fans can celebrate now that “Godzilla Raids Again” raids again!

This DVD attempt to cram into about an hour the entire history of North American exploration. Given its aim, I believe it does quite a decent job of doing so. It summarized five hundred years of history and many dozen expeditions and explorers into brief tidbits of information. I don’t think this is a good educational tool, since it would likely be somewhat uninteresting — it does not have very interesting stories, just a stream of information. Rather, this is a good starting point to someone wishing to research North American exploration and would like an intro to the main events and people in its history. Not really something to excite people about history, people seeing this should already be excited.

Shin Chan is an anime in Japan for kids, however, the adapted series for America is far from it. Adult Swim and Funimation re-wrote the dialogue of the show to suit the viewers of Adult Swim. Cultural references are also changed to things Americans can relate to. This box set is the collection of the six “test” episodes as well as the sixteen episodes Adult Swim picked up to complete the full season. This dvd set is defidently a must buy if you do not offend easily.

This is a review of just the dvd disc itself. While Shinchan is silly and hilarious to watch, it did not include the japanese audio nor did it have subtitles as described.

The beginning went slow.. but then suddenly I became captivated with it. The whole idea of the series taking place entirely inside of an online RPG is even more interesting than it sounds. Ever play one of your RPGs and think “This is so good.. I kinda wish it were an anime.”? Well that’s kinda what .hack//SIGN is. .. and if you don’t like watching it, you can always invest your money in the .hack video game series for PS2 instead.

If you’re a fan of the movie “Spartacus”, this is the version to get; the Universal DVD is as bare bones as they get with just the movie. The Criterion version looks great. The facelift the film received help return much of its luster. Kubrick later disowned his version of the epic Hollywood Sword & Sandal genre, but Kubrick brings much of his sensibility to bear; the fight sequences and epic vistas bring to mind Kubrick’s work on Paths of Glory and 2001. True, this isn’t a complete Kubrick picture; Kubrick had nothing to do with the screenplay and Douglas had all but cast the picture in collaboration with director Anthony Mann (dismissed after butting heads with Douglas one too many times).

Is it Kubrick’s finest film? Well, frankly no it isn’t. It’s an interesting mishmash between Kubrick’s detached, ironic style and Hollywood glitz. Spartacus is Kubrick for people who don’t care for Kubrick’s detached style. It doesn’t measure up to Lolita, Dr. Strangelove, 2001 or A Clockwork Orange although it does compare favorable to the much darker Paths of Glory.

Kubrick stated that his intent at the time was to subvert the cliches of the genre. As a result, Kubrick manages to reinvent a genre that was in danger of becoming a parody of itself. As a collaborative effort, Spartacus is a great piece of entertainment and far more sophisticated than almost everything else that came out of Hollywood at the time.

The transfer is beautiful with much of Kubrick’s bold use of color restored. The strong acting of most of the cast has always been a virtue of Sparatcus. The soundtrack has been meticulously transferred to 5.1 and Alex North’s beatiful score has never sounded so sweet, tragic and powerful before. The audio commentary is the same one that was on the laserdisc version. It provides additional understanding about the complexity of making an independently produced project like Spartacus. Kirk Douglas’ bold decision to produce the film himself (with Universal-International distributing)was a leap of faith in both the material and the talented director.

The second disc is stuffed with supplements that are found nowhere else.There’s two older interviews with Peter Ustinov, Jean Simmons plus one that Ustinov did in 1992 for the laserdisc edition. It’s delightful and he shares a number of funny stories about the picture. There’s also a text overview of Kubrick’s career and his involvement with the picture. Included also are sketches Kubrick made for the motion picture (artistically they’re nothing special but they do provide insight into Kubrick’s role in the visualization of the film). Included are some vintage newsreels and a promotional film originally made but unfinished for Spartacus that gives us a glimpse behind the scenes. The promotional film is missing it’s soundtrack (in fact, it might have been lost if not for the forsight of a private collector) and has much from North’s score. We also get to glimpse at Saul Bass’ wonderful title design sequence.

Criterion has been both praised and criticized for their DVDs and laserdiscs before. While they tend to be expensive, this is the complete package. Occasionally Criterion will release a package that isn’t up to their usual standards. Spartacus isn’t one of them. Robert Harris (Harris restored the film along with Vertigo)evidently was also involved in the transfer to DVD. If you want a spectacular transfer of the film, loads of extras about the making and background of the project from those involved, this is the set to pick up.

Long before Russell Crowe picked up his sword and battled corrupt Roman emperors, Kirk Douglas showed him the way in “Spartacus”. This epic 1960 film still ranks as one of the best performances in Douglas’s distinguished career, and it marked his second collaboration with famed director Stanley Kubrick. Even more than “Gladiator”, “Spartacus” is based on a real historical event, although it greatly exaggerates the actual history. Spartacus was a Roman slave in the first century AD who became a gladiator for the Romans, but then escaped and formed an enormous army (estimated at anywhere from 50,000 to 75,000) of freed slaves and gladiators. For the next year this army, under Spartacus’s leadership, terrorized the Italian countryside, until they were finally trapped and destroyed in battle with the still-powerful Roman Army. As an old-fashioned Hollywood epic, “Spartacus” doesn’t disappoint the viewer – there are epic battle scenes, high drama, and some great acting by several Hollywood legends. Interestingly, the film’s producers felt that the contrast between the slave-gladiators and their corrupt Roman masters would be given greater contrast if they cast British actors (Sir Laurence Olivier, Peter Ustinov, Charles Laughton) as the leading Roman characters, and American actors as the slaves (Douglas, Tony Curtis, Jean Simmons). All of the actors listed above shine in this film – Olivier simply drips with menace and hypocrisy as the great Roman General Crassus, who will stop at nothing to crush the slave revolt and bring the entire Roman Empire under his personal control. Laughton is delightful as Gracchus, a fat and somewhat corrupt, but also clever and freedom-loving, Roman Senator who loathes Crassus. Gracchus tries desperately to keep Crassus from becoming a dictator and destroying the freedoms of the Roman Republic. He fails, but nonetheless emerges as the sole Roman hero of the movie. Peter Ustinov steals every scene as the bumbling and craven owner of a gladiator training school who rescues Spartacus from certain death and makes him into a gladiator, then reluctantly helps Gracchus gain one last “victory” over Crassus by stealing Crassus’s new love interest (and Spartacus’s former wife) and taking her to freedom. As for the slaves, Douglas is superb as Spartacus – if the real Spartacus had been as noble and heroic as Douglas’s character, then Roman history might have been very different! (Historically, the real Spartacus and his slave army could have escaped from Italy, but instead went on a wild looting and stealing spree across the Italian countryside, thus eliminating any moral advantage they had over their corrupt Roman masters, and also throwing away their chance to gain permanent freedom. This led many sympathetic Romans to join the fight to crush the slave revolt, which was done, brutally). Jean Simmons portrays Spartacus’s “wife” (they’re never legally married) as a strong and honorable woman; and Tony Curtis is the cultured and well-educated, but also tragic slave of Crassus who escapes and becomes like a son to Spartacus. The scene near the end of the movie where Crassus forces the two men to fight to the death is especially poignant. In many ways this is a movie ahead of its’ time – it delicately but still decisively suggests that Crassus was bisexual and had a strong sexual interest in Tony Curtis’s character (which caused his character to escape from Crassus’ estate). In terms of scope, emotional impact, and visual splendor it’s hard to top this film. Anyone who’s interested in the golden age of Hollywood films and enjoys watching some legendary actors in their prime will love “Spartacus”!

I now thing I should of saved the $10 dollars and just bought the plan DVD set. The back pack is more like a draw string bag were they just made the strings longer and looped them through the bottom calling it a back pack but the box it comes in can be used to store all the DVD’s of the show.

So I say save the $10 dollars and buy just the DVD’s

Gurren Lagann gets better and better with every episode, great dub and the soundtrack is awsome. Definetaly worth buying and the backpack it comes with is great as well. (I recommend it for real)

My kids and nieces LOVE this movie! (So do the adults) Notonly is it an easy and fun storyline, but the songs are great too! Acompliment to this movie is the soundtrack cassette tape (which I am looking for a replacement). We listen to the cassette in the van all the time. It is definately the favorite of all we have. I was 4 when I first watched it and I have been searching for the title to this moive for over 13 years I finnally found it and watched it again and Its still the same great moive that I have alway had a nack for. Its great for kids. A bit scary in a few spots but its an awsome moive full of adventure and the singing is out of this world. Anyone can enjoy this moive.

We love the Berenstain Bears, especially the older shows. This DVD has the Easter special which is one of our favorites. We have been looking for it for several years and were very glad to finally find it available.

This is a newly released DVD?? It is soooo old, the quality is TERRIBLE, the voices are different – there is some really odd singing – and it does not seem at all like the current episodes we see on TV. Glad we just rented it from the library!

Girls Bravo is definitely a series worth picking up if you’re looking for a sexy romantic comedy to keep the laughs coming.

I don’t mean to get personal here, but I can’t figure out what’s wrong with that last reviewer. Among Marx Brothers fans, it’s hardly controversial that “Nutshell” is far and away the best documentary on the Marx boys. In fact, when this film first aired on PBS (I was 12), it made me a lifelong fan. I had this film on VHS for years and was SO happy when it finally came out on DVD last year. No Marx fan should be without it.

Regarding the last reviewer, I wonder if he got ahold of some weird re-edited bootleg. First of all, the “chapters” on the individual brothers only comprise the opening minutes of the show, and it’s a brilliant way to familiarize you with their individual personalities, before launching into the chronology of their stage, film and TV career. The weirdest thing he complained about was the repetition of clips. I know this film backwards and forwards and I challenge anyone to find ONE CLIP that repeats itself. There aren’t any! What was he watching?? Then he goes on to recommend “Inside the Marx Brothers”?? Ecchhh. Scratchy clips from trailers, re-hashed photos, interviews with meaningless subjects, and NO production value. “Nutshell” was produced when key witnesses were still alive: writers(Morrie Ryskind, Robert Pirosh, Irving Brecher), co-stars, family members. Even George Fenneman from “You Bet Your Life,” Dick Cavett & Woody Allen.

This film was obviously authorized by the surviving Marx family, and the filmmakers had access to clips from all their best films, as well as rare clips I’ve never seen anywhere else. They also let the scenes play out, instead of just excerpting a few seconds for the short-attention-span crown. Most of the prints are beautiful… in pristine condition.

If you look at the credits, the writer and editor was Joe Adamson who wrote the best book on the Marx Brothers (”Groucho, Harpo, Chico & Sometimes Zeppo”) and the producer is Robert Weide, the same guy who directs “Curb Your Enthusiasm.” According to the IMBd, he’s won 3 Emmys and was nominated for an Oscar for a Lenny Bruce documentary. The narrator is movie legend Gene Kelly.

Looking for the one documentary to own on the Marx Brothers? Is this the one? You bet your life! (P.S.: There’s a reason this one is more expensive than the other Marx docs: It’s WORTH it!)

This DVD is fantastic. Of the three Marx Brothers Bio DVD’s around (the others being the very good “The Unknown Marx Brothers” & the decent “Inside the Marx Brothers”), “The Marx Brothers in a Nutshell” is definatly the best one. The only down side is that it does not contain any interviews with Marx Brothers themselves (all the interviews are done by Marx family & friends), and there are not DVD extras. But, the DVD itself is just terrific, all great interviews, long clips from their classic movies. It’s over and hour and a half long and even though I’ve seen the movies countless times, I still can’t stop laughing at the scenes. This was a PBS special from 1982 I believe their is some new footage added to this DVD. A must for any Marx Brothers fan, and although this may be a bit pricey here on Amazon, believe me it’s worth it!
